Ethereal Designs from Bonnie Strauss

by Cheryl Bruedigam

Bonnie Strauss of LA, may be one of the most amazing designers ever. Her designs reflect the ultimate in feminine style, not only enhancing a woman's beauty but somehow reaching beyond the surface to the true essence of the feminine spirit. Deciding which pieces to feature was probably one of the hardest editorial decisions I have ever had to make.

All handmade, her designs are ethereal and in some ways almost ghostly, incurring a beauty rarely seen elsewhere in the fashion industry with a nod to the Flappers as well as the Victorian era.

And talk about unique, let's add a little fringe for the leather and lace freaks like me who can't get enough of this type of thing.

Strauss also creates handmade jewelry pieces with a touch of the feminine exotic.

For those wanting a more contemporary look, neither does Strauss disappoint in this department as this beauty demonstrates.

Strauss herself is not without an ethereal quality, angelic in her looks and demeanor. Oddly, she has no website; she works from her Facebook page. She sells her line to select retailers and she also sells directly to the public.

Contact her on Facebook for more information, to LIKE her designs or to order some of her amazingly unique and one-of-a-kind pieces. Or you may email her at BonnieStrauss@gmail.com

Celebrating a Best Friend’s Punjabi Wedding

Wendy Yale of Houston, Texas, in the Punjabi bridesmaid dress

Cultural weddings and celebrations can be an amazing opportunity to experience not only beauty and new fashions, but warmth and love from communities other than your own. If you are in the position to form friendships with those from other cultures, you may be in for a rare treat. This was the experience for Wendy Yale of Houston, Texas, who when one of her best friends married, was given the unique honor of participating in a Punjabi wedding and the week of celebratory events that led up to the ceremony. We were able to talk with Yale and she has agreed to share her lovely experience with us.

Wendy Yale and the Bride

WSF:
Wendy, this is an amazing outfit that you recently donned for a friend’s wedding. Could you first give us a little background on the event?

WY: One of my dearest friends had become engaged to her high school sweetheart and had asked me to be in their wedding. I was thrilled and honored to have been chosen!  Before we even started looking at bridesmaids dresses I had to find an outfit for the engagement party, which, in itself, is a major event attended by hundreds of their friends and family members.

Wendy Yale and her husband James Yale. The blue and gold dress from Roop Sari PalaceHoustonTexas, worn for the engagement party.

It [the engagement party] was very elaborate; felt like a wedding reception! I wanted to dress in the style of the groom-to-be's family, Punjabi (Punjabi are a people from the Punjab region in India.  It also refers to their culture and language).  So off my friend and I went to a local store in Houston famous for their saris/sprees, lehngas, and suits.  The store was very large and filled with racks of the most vibrant and gorgeous clothes I had ever seen!  The store where I bought the blue and gold suit in Houston is called Roop Sari Palace. It had to be altered, like most of the clothing there, as they don't come in sizes. It was more of a "one size fits all."

For the wedding our bridesmaids suits were custom made in India (our measurements were taken at a local dress shop called Parinaz, then sent overseas) and picked up personally by the groom's mother a month before the big day.  A week before the wedding I tried it on, it fit perfectly!  The Tikka  (gold jewelry on my forehead) was a gift from the bride.  I LOVED it!

                                          Henna from the Mehndi party.

The bangles and the henna on my hands were given to me at an event the week of the wedding called a Mehndi.  All the ladies come together to celebrate the bride, show her our support, and to bond before the ceremony.

WSF: What an amazing experience all-in-all! The Mehndi is a unique event then. Maybe similar to a bridal shower in the west?

As for the beautiful henna that was done for the Mehndi, what, if any, significance does it have in relation to the wedding or ceremonies? Does it represent something specific? How long dos it stay on?

From left to right: Yale's son Cameron, her husband James, the Groom and a wedding guest

WY: I guess you could say the Mehndi was similar to a bridal shower, however the men were welcome to come (but chose a less "chatty" atmosphere in another part of the house/yard).  My friend was thrown a bridal shower by her soon to be sister-in-law a month before the Mehndi, Sengee, wedding, and reception.  A Punjabi wedding is typically five or more days of preparation and celebration.

The henna is really only another form of decoration. Everything from clothing, to jewelry, shoes, even under garments (which will only be seen by the bride and groom), are spectacular.  I was asked what I would like my henna design to look like but as I had never had it done before I left it up to the artist to decide for me.  Some of the ladies chose to do very traditional designs on the palms of the hands, solid fingertips.  Others opted for ornate flowers, delicate swirls, or intricate designs.  The bride did both her palms and the back of her hands, as well as her feet.  It goes on like a clay or gel, then dries after 30-60 minutes.  The dried pieces are rubbed off.  It looked amazing!  After twenty-four hours the dye became even darker.  It lasted about a week then naturally wore off.

WSF: Would you mind sharing some fashion details about the fitted bridesmaid dress that you wore in the wedding ceremony? Material, decorations or any special detailing. Also, how did it make you feel getting to wear this type of dress?

WY: To be honest, I don't know what the material is, and there isn't a tag inside.  All the bridesmaids went to the dress shop and they measured us.  The measured our bust, arm (from shoulder to forearm/three quarter sleeve), from our clavicle to mid-shin, and waist.   I think it took about two months from the time we got measured until the grooms mother flew to India to pick them up.  (I don't know why the suits weren't shipped here; I can only assume she was visiting family while there).

James Yale (husband of Wendy), son Cameron and Wendy Yale, Groom and Bride

I felt like a princess!  Only to be outdone by the bride.  I really can not describe the honor it was to have been a part of the ceremony, traditions, and family!

WSF: Beautiful. Thank you Wendy for sharing this unique and personal experience with us. There is no doubt this is a treasured memory and we appreciate being able to hear your story.

In closing, any time that you come upon the opportunity to participate in a unique cultural experience, open up and say yes. New friends, new ideas, and new experiences are part of the spirit of life and may elevate you to new heights and dreams yet un-imagined (not to mention enhancing your wardrobe!).

Product Review: Redken Smooth Lock

Redken Smooth Lock Stay Sleek leave-in cream for dry and unruly hair seals in smoothness for up to three shampoos. Say goodbye to frizz and hello to smooth, sleek hair!

The heat-activated formula in Redken Smooth Lock Stay Sleek tames, nourishes and controls hair for weightless frizz control and intensive surface smoothing. The Thermo Active Polymer works to retain internal moisture and strengthen hair, whilst fragrant almond oil conditions and coats the hairs surface to leave you with a silky finish and added shine.

Directions of use: Apply on towel-dried hair, do not rinse.

This product works wonders, especially with blow-drying and flat-ironing; however, it also works wonders with natural air-drying of the hair, especially curly hair with some frizz. Applied to hair after towel-drying, then allowing hair to dry naturally without brushing out any curls, Redken Smooth Lock took away any frizz or flyaway and kept the curls exactly intact. Where previously attempts have been made to achieve this effect with the use of mousse, Redken Smooth Lock is the key. Mousse will leave a heavy, hard feel and unnatural look after drying in the hair but Smooth Lock dries beautifully and naturally for a clean, sleek style without any effort or fuss.

This product may just become your new best friend.

Beauty Q&A: Nails

Beauty Q&A:

Is it ever OK to wear one color of polish on fingernails and another color on toenails?

NO. Never. Not unless you want to look thirteen.

Aside from the lack of class and a polished, finished, complete look, the biggest factor here is the choppiness this creates breaks the flow of your look and no matter what your style is, the goal is to flow from top to bottom.

Spirited Summer Pieces from Givenchy

If you can get beyond the haunting, minimalistic faces of this entire show while ignoring the shoes as well, the pieces themselves are exquisitely spirited. A select few even had an Atlantis or Utopian feel to them.

The light, lacy, slinky lingerie look predominating the line shows a freshly feminine perspective that would flatter most any woman and has been missing for some time in today's fashions. We loved this line. We also did very much enjoy and appreciate the cultural diversity among the models.

It’s worth a watch to take some new summer tips to spice up, lighten up and add a feminine touch to your summer wardrobe or be inspired to shop Givenchy.

Here are Denver-based luxury tour operator Rothschild Safaris’ most popular destinations and itineraries for 2016. Signifying a clear trend towards traveler demand for iconic experiences and interpersonal exchanges, the Rothschild Safaris’ Hottest Trips for 2016 list spans Africa, Asia and South America.

Luxury tents

“The biggest trend we’re seeing for 2016 is that our clients are very specifically asking us to plan and book experiences, no longer simply asking for hotels by name or generic destinations,” says Leora Rothschild, founder and President of Rothschild Safaris. “This is dramatically different when compared to years past. Our expert travel designers are building itineraries around highly customized experiences, things like walking safaris in Africa, guided fly-fishing in India and behind-the-scenes tours of exotic architecture and festivals in Asia.”

“Even in emerging destinations like Ethiopia and Myanmar, we’re able to customize individual experiences spanning culture, culinary, history, and wildlife allowing for a more rewarding travel experience,” continued Rothschild. “This is the true luxury in travel that our discerning clients are booking in 2016.”

While Rothschild Safaris operates in over 28 countries, here are 7 destinations that top the list of Hottest Trips:

An indigenous woman

Kenya: Kenya is well known as home to the quintessential safari experience. In 2016, travelers eager to interact with local culture and support their overall health and wellness are increasingly spending more time outside of the safari vehicle than inside while exploring Kenya.

Tanda Tula Safari Lodge South Africa
South Africa Ultimate Family Safari: A destination popular with family and multi-generational group travelers, in 2016. Families traveling in South Africa can enjoy family friendly world-class dining, an innovative foodie culture and a unique wine and country experience between Cape Town and Franschhoek before setting off for a magical wildlife safari experience.

Myanmar: Myanmar (formerly Burma) has just emerged from over 50 years of isolation from the Western world. Called "The Golden Land" thanks to the thousands of gilded pagodas scattered around the country, Myanmar today is often compared to what Thailand was decades ago. But things are changing rapidly, and thoughtful travelers who understand their impact on the country and its people are eagerly exploring this magical destination in 2016.

Ethiopia: In 2016, travelers eager to learn something while traveling are increasingly choosing to go to Ethiopia. With its own religion and some of the world’s most well preserved ancient artifacts easily accessible to travelers, Ethiopia offers a hands-on cultural experience for history buffs.

Ecuador and the Galapagos: Moving beyond the traditional Galapagos cruise, in 2016 active travelers are exploring the Galapagos Islands by mountain bike and kayak followed by historic and cultural experiences on Ecuador’s mainland.

India: While India’s wildlife, including tigers, remains a key draw for nature-loving travelers; in 2016 exploring local cultural festivals alongside India’s best local guides is also an in-demand experience.

Chile: Home to the driest desert on earth, a lush and mountainous Lake District, and Antarctic ice fjords, Chile’s diverse landscapes are all within the borders of one very skinny country, stretching over 2,500 miles along the west coast of South America. In 2016, active travelers are getting off the beaten path and exploring Chile on horseback, on foot and by bike.

For nearly two decades, Rothschild Safaris has specialized in custom crafted African safaris featuring wildlife, conservation and luxury in some of the most remote corners of the earth. Product Review - Biogenol Ultra Deep Masque/Deep Conditioner 4 oz.

Biogenol Ultra Deep Masque/Deep Conditioner 4 oz.

Salon recommended, Biogenol Ultra Deep Masque/Deep Conditioner, helps to repair damaged hair to leave it full, silky and manageable. It is for all hair types and contains a natural anti-oxidant to prevent fading (for color). It is also glycerin-free.

For a deep conditioning treatment, apply the Ultra Deep Masque to wet hair. The company advises a heat cap or getting under a dryer. For our purposes, we applied in a hot shower for the duration of the shower. The results were excellent with softness in the hair not previously there. It is especially good for unruly hair and will add a new element of control.

It is pricey, but a little goes a long way and if you have problem hair, it may be worth the investment. Would we use it again? Absolutely, our staff loved it.

Empowering Women around the World is Win,Win for Us All

In sub-Saharan Africa [alone], women devote at least 16 million hours a day — 5.8 billion hours a year — just to collecting drinking water (Mercy Corp). That is in just one country in a continent that is short on water in many areas. The point is the fact that these women have to spend so much time on basic survival they can do little else. If their basic needs were met, how much more time would they have to care for their families, help their communities and create or produce products that would net them income for a better life?

Women in these types of countries make up a talented, creative sector of the textile and fashion industry: those who are able, have the resources and the time to produce such items. These are items that culturally unique and made by hand, or even in garment or production shops, where the pay is laughable and the hours are long. Beautiful, brilliant, amazing items, apparel, accessories, home decor and so many things that we love to buy to add these cultural spirits to our own lives and style. Think of all the beautiful and spirited fashions and textiles that you love. Imagine the person from whose hands they were made. Now imagine not being able to purchase these types of things. Imagine if women were not denied the resources they need what all they could create.

As women, men, as people, as humans and consumers, especially those of the fashion industry, it is our duty to assist these women in their need for empowerment. One place this begins is with the fight for gender equality for not only the women of sub-Saharan Africa, but women worldwide.

According to Mercy Corp, “In many places around the world, females have unequal access to important resources like information, money, school, jobs and land. And they are oftentimes not allowed to make decisions for themselves or their families, like who they will marry, how many children they will have, how they will spend their time or how to spend household income. . . And with fewer skills and tools at their disposal, women and girls also end up being some of the most vulnerable when crises like war and natural disaster strike. . . The challenges that girls and women face vary widely from culture to culture, but one theme is prevalent: Unequal access to opportunities that give them an independent, productive place in their communities.”

Let us do all that we may to assist these women worldwide in their empowerment so that they too may come to be confident in their skills, lives and achievements and contributions that they may make to their families, communities, and to the world at large.

Please visit the Mercy Core website on women and genderequality to find out more and to find out ways that you may help or make a donation. You may also help by sharing this article with everyone you know and especially to those of you readers who support the fashion industry and would love to see these women flourish in their creativity. We can all do our part to bring awareness to the need for empowerment of women everywhere. Think about it. What if this was you?

Building a Classic, Timeless Wardrobe: One Camisole - Three Great Looks

Gals with real classic wardrobe sense know that getting the most out of a few classic pieces goes a long way. Rather than buying into fads that come and go (which can be draining on the wallet) purchasing timeless pieces that can adapt and survive the ever-changing world of fashion as well as your own needs, tastes and moods in the smartest strategy.

One such timeless piece is a silky or linen creamy camisole. Any color will match and it will compliment any outfit from jeans and shorts to business dress or an evening out. One key factor to changing it up is the accessories chosen to go with it and how they are used. Here we demonstrate how to get three different looks by adding a beautiful but simple cream lace scarf. This particular camisole is an import from Sivana Spirit, made in India with lovely embroidery and is in a creamy light almost champagne color.

The scarf was a find in a gallery boutique, Soul River, in Silver City, New Mexico. It is beautiful lace with a bit of lacy fringe to add that spirited touch.

In the first look, we show the top belted with the lace scarf. This look will work well for casual wear or outings over jeans or a long flowing skirt.

In this second look, we show the camisole with the lace scarf to be worn around the neck. This camisole will work with most any business suit, just leave off the scarf. After work, remove the suit jacket, add the scarf and you are ready for an evening out.

In the third look, the lace scarf is to be draped around the shoulders in the manner of a wrap. This look is exceptional for an evening out.

Additionally, the scarf may be tied around the head or around a ponytail for a very spirited look. And if you are real creative, you may come up with your own great ideas. Remember, the point is to create multiple uses and outfits from just a few simple, classic pieces that will never go out of style. These are the staples of your wardrobe and the beginning of a perfect working-closet, meaning a closet that works for you rather than full of pieces that were bought on a whim or for fad's sake and never worn because they just did not work, were mismatched, were an off-color. With timeless pieces you can never go wrong and you will build a wardrobe that is lasting. Buying less pieces allows you to spend more on the quality of a piece and that will give it lasting power. Spirited pieces can still be staples in your wardrobe as this imported Indian camisole demonstrates. Even if you just stick with classic pieces to build your wardrobe, the "spirit" can be brought in through your accessories as we have shown with the lace scarf.

Have fun, be creative, get one classic piece and see how many great looks you can make!

World Spirit Fashions – Harem Pants Review

by Cheryl Yale-Bruedigam

It took me months to make up my mind as to whether or not I would try these harem pants from Sivana Spirit. I would return time after time to look at them in the online shop. They come in many colors and looked so comfortable. I had several concerns though: the low crotch, the elastic eight-inch waistband, and the one-size-fits-all because I am on the heavier end of that scale.

After months of thought, I decided to give them a try and ordered them.

All of my concerns were put to rest immediately. The low crotch is very comfortable and feels much like you are wearing a skirt.

The eight-inch waistband is very comfortable and not restrictive at all, I barely know it is there.

The one-size-fits-all fits up to a 38 inch waist and runs true to the measurements. The fit is comfortable, loose and flowing.

The material is very sheer so these are warmer weather pants however leggings worn beneath them make them work quite well for colder weather as well.

They are great in yoga poses and on the mat.

Overall, I love these pants and will order more. I am sure you will enjoy them as well if you are a bit bold, a free spirit and looking to feel like a goddess, or at least a bit exotic.

If you enjoyed this article, join our Facebook page, World Spirit Fashions

Add Some Paris Pink for Spring Spirit

Nothing adds a little feminine spirit like a splash of pink and nothing says spring quite like Paris as we conjure romantic images of the pink flowering trees against a backdrop of the Eiffel Tower.

To create this look, try a skirt or blouse with a pink ruffle, or a simple pink T with a ruffle sewn on (create your own design!), just enough color to lift the spirits (it can be quite easy to overdo with pink, not going for the Barbie look here), keep it elegant, yet spirited.

Pink nails or accessories are another easy way to add a little Paris pink to your look. It’s simple, easy and effective with just the right splash of color. Remember to make sure the complete look flows seamlessly.

Jewelry for the Spirited Woman: Ankle Bracelets

By Cheryl Bruedigam

Women have long adorned themselves in many ways and jewelry is one of the most common adornments worldwide, knowing no cultural boundaries.

Ankle bracelets have always been a part of this throughout the ages becoming more popular in the west during the sixties. When I was with the modeling agency with which I fist began, there were strict rules for us to follow in our public appearance and one of those was no ankle bracelets. This was pounded into my very cells and it took me decades to overcome so that I will now freely wear an ankle bracelet without thinking the world is going come crashing down. But as the saying goes, “we’ve come a long way baby.”

In the west there really are no rules as to what kind of ankle bracelet to wear, how to wear them or upon which ankle (right or left) they should be worn. Though in some cultures, the left ankle may denote a relationship status just as a wedding ring is worn in the western world upon the left ring finger.

The bracelet should fit and hang comfortably just below the ankle bone for a taunt but relaxed look and feel. Layers of the bracelets may be worn to create a more exotic look. Choosing to wear an ankle bracelet is of course a personal thing and may be done for stylish purposes, religious purposes, relationship status as afore mentioned, sentiment, or any number of other reasons and maybe just because it adds a flirtatious, subtle but sensual appeal that is not found with other pieces of jewelry. In a way it brings out a part of our femininity that is otherwise left unnoticed.

Ankle bracelets add a little fun and spontaneity to certain outfits but just make sure it flows with the rest of your attire. An ankle bracelet with a business suit is obviously a poor choice, you get the idea. A flowing skirt or shorts will be much better suited to help you complete the look with flow and continuity. In photography, it is called composition. You want your composition to have flow and continuity. If you are unsure, take a selfie or look in a full length-mirror. Do all pieces of your attire flow together to create one smooth look? Or is it choppy because something is mis-matched? Take note and make adjustments until you have just the right flow and you are picture-perfect (regardless of your style) but most especially if an ankle bracelet is involved.

Have fun, be creative, be unique, be spirited.

Spiritual Jewelry for the Spirited Woman

Jewelry energizes especially if it is made with certain gemstones or crystals. There are many beautiful and healing malas and wrist malas to choose from. Selections may be based on color, healing properties, personal needs or even fashionable looks. Many are handmade or imported from exotic places known for spiritual cultures like India, Nepal or Bali.

Let your jewelry enhance your spiritual nature while it also compliments your outfit and your own unique style.

3 Spirited Styles to Take You From Spring into Summer

Here are three easy style that you can pull together to take you smoothly into summer from spring. They are unique looks that will lift your wardrobe as well as your spirits.

Free Spirit

A short white cotton camisole trimmed in a bit of lace or any creative edging paired with a loose, flowing, soft and billowing cotton skirt. Choose your colors, get several of each then mix and match.
If you do not have a camisole top, this look may be easily created with any plain white t-shirt! Just cut the hem off to the navel, cut out the sleeves, sew on the edging of your choice. Add a wrist full of dangly bangles and bracelets to complete the look. And don't forget the leather sandals.

Romantic

Nothing says romance quite like lace. Imported or handmade lace from places like Italy can offer the finest in fashion creation. Be inventive. Visit the bridal sections of consignment shops, pick something lacy and wear as is for a sweet spring date or get busy and re-purpose that lace into something magical and uniquely you. If you need to replace the  long braided headband, a simple strip of lace edging will do nicely as will a silky scarf. White open-toed heels will add to the romantic style.

Bohemian

Let your inner goddess/hippie-chick shine in a retro early seventies tie-dye maxi-look. This is a two-piece outfit. Use a tube-top and wrap a gauzy scarf around it to add more flow. Pick a multi-colored skirt or tie-dye your own. Add the headband of your choice or use a rolled up bandana and tie in the back. Sandals or just bare feet, what could be better?

Spanning The Centre's two levels are 24 private treatment rooms, a private consultation room, weight training and cardiovascular studios (on the upper “active” level), Waters Bar, a full-service salon and, and a Meditation Atrium (on the lower “quiet” level). This peaceful sanctuary, with soft filtered sunlight, leather chaise lounges, lush greenery and gently cascading fountains, offers an ideal environment for The Centre's guided meditation classes and one-on-one meditation sessions.
Treatments Inspired by the Desert and the World's Far Reaches Many of The Centre's body treatments draw their restorative properties from desert plants and minerals -- such as aloe vera, jojoba and chamomile -- that have been prized for centuries by the native peoples of the Southwest. Spa-goers will find these in therapeutic treatments such as the signature Kachina Aromatherapy body treatment, named for the legendary kachina spirits of the Hopi Indians who made their home in the Arizona desert.
International influences can be found in treatments such as the Turkish Body Scrub, the Thermal Moor Mud Wrap, which uses organic Hungarian moor mud to detoxify and rejuvenate, and the Bindi, an herbal exfoliation, massage and body wrap based on the ancient Ayuervedic arts of India. A full array of skin and facial treatments are also available, from the signature Botanical Radiance Facial to Smoothing Lip Treatment.
Massage: From Centuries-Old Techniques to Exclusive New Therapies
The spa also offers a full array of massage and bodywork therapies, ranging from the classic Swedish massage and Shiatsu to the unique Reiki Chakra Balancing Treatment. Designed exclusively for The Centre for Well-Being, this treatment creates a sensation of deep relaxation through guided visualizations that accompany the application of essential oil blends based on each of the chakras (“wheels of light”) of East Indian culture. Two other massage treatments created specifically for the Centre are Table Thai, which takes the time-honored Thai massage,
traditionally performed on the floor, and adapts it to the massage table, and Acussage, which combines traditional massage techniques with ancient Chinese therapies to alleviate stress and pain.
